Domain Registration and Hosting

As the construction of your new web site gets underway, we'll tend to a couple of important pieces of mechanics: domain registration and hosting.

Image: Internet lights the world

Domain Registration

Domain registration is a piece of cake, once you choose a domain name ...but that choice may not be as easy as it seems, given the frontier nature of the Internet. Lots of domain names have been swallowed up already, most by real live organizations (some of which have names disturbingly similar to yours!) but some by speculators. I'll help you research and choose a domain name that will work for you and for the visitors you want to attract to your site. Then we'll get it registered so that it's yours and yours alone.

Hosting

You'll need a web host, too. Your host provides a web server, constantly connected to the Internet, that will serve up your web pages when a visitor types in your URL. There are thousands of hosting companies out there, all over the world. They offer all kinds of services, some of which you'll need, but many of which you can safely pass up. The prices they charge run the gamut from a few dollars a month to a few hundred dollars. I'll help you choose a hosting company that will meet your needs, at a price you can afford.

By getting the mechanics of domain registration and hosting out of the way early, going live will be just a matter of throwing a switch -- no last-minute delays!
